Food Waste Recycling

What is food waste recycling?

More than 17 million tonnes of food is wasted in the UK every year.

Recycling Food Waste as a biogas is a positive and environmentally sensitive solution to dealing with food waste and diverting it from landfill. To date, a lot of effort has been made when reducing the amount of food waste ending up in landfill but this can be greatly reduced with minimal efforts.

Food waste recycling methods

At ALG Biogas we use Anaerobic Digestion to recycle the food waste where food waste including animal manure and other organic material left over from food and farm processes are added to an enclosed tank. The tank is heated to 40 degrees Celsius then naturally occurring microorganisms break down the waste.

As the waste breaks down is creates biogas which can be collected and used to generate electricity heat or transport fuels. It also produces Biofertiliser that can be used as an alternative to chemical fertilisers in farming and land regeneration.

Recycling Food Waste via anaerobic digestion to produce biogas and Biofertiliser is a positive and environmentally sensitive solution to dealing with food waste and diverting it from landfill.

What food waste we accept

Deliveries & Transport

All food waste deliveries must be transported and delivered in suitable secure containers and by a licensed waste carrier. The delivery will also need to be accompanied by a Duty of Care Waste Transfer Note.

We accept food waste deliveries in a variety of ways:

  • Kitchen food waste from both local authority kerbside collections and commercial sources, this can either be loose wastage or bagged kitchen food waste
  • Front and/or rear end loaders
  • Bulk deliveries in walking floors and artic tippers
  • Skips
  • Roll on and roll off containers of all sizes
  • Compactors
  • 240 litre bins, pallets, dolavs, IBCs and drums
  • Tankered liquid food wastes

Please contact our team at ALG Biogas if you require a collection service. We are able to arrange transport through our network of providers from your business to our AD facility.

Secure Destruction

At ALG Biogas we are able to offer complete traceability in our safe and secure destruction process. All food waste is removed from its packaging and processed in our closed Anaerobic Digestion plant.

Packaging is then processed into refuse derived fuel and incinerated in a process that contributes to the energy production process.

All goods in are electronically recorded and tracked and a secure destruction certificate issued for your own transparent audit trail.
